The roster of VMware View customer references keeps growing. I though I would share some of the recent ones so that other customers and prospects could learn how other companies are deploying View 5.0 and what sets View apart from the competition: simplicity, scalability, integration with the vSphere platform and lower costs.

Blue Cross Blue Shield Kansas City

Learn how Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas City is using VMware View desktop virtualization software to quickly deploy virtual desktops that meet security requirements outlined by HIPPA regulations while providing clinicians the anytime anywhere access they need to provide the best patient care possible.

“Citrix was very complicated and difficult to maintain. With VMware, it just works out of the box. We don’t spend a lot of time keeping it up and running like we did with Citrix. And now I have time to do other things that I need to be working on instead of just keeping it up and running.”

City of Pittsburgh

The City of Pittsburgh’s City Information Systems Department deployed VMware desktop virtualization and server consolidation solutions to support its nearly 3,000 users ranging from public safety, police, and fire to the various branches of local government including the Mayor’s Office, the City Council, and Controller’s Office.

Seattle University

Long time VMware and View customer. Regional university in Seattle University that deployed virtual desktops back in 2009 when they were looking for a solution for their computer labs. They looked at both Citrix and VMware but previous experiences dictated that CTX was expensive and complicated to deploy and manage…Additionally they had a big investment in VMware so they went View. They have about 600 desktops.

Now that we officially announced our overall 2011 results, I can commend on last year VMware View performance .

Q4 2011 was another record breaking quarter for VMware View finishing a great year for desktop virtualization at VMware and our customers.

This success was driven by more customer deployments as well as the momentum created by the release of View 5.0, the greatest release of View to date.

View 5.0 removed the two remaining technical competitive hurdles as I blogged here, while doubling down on simplicity, scalability (with vSphere 5.0) and ease of use. This is where the ROI for desktop virtualization really comes from, you need to be able to to quickly deploy the solution, scale it and realize the value. That’s where View excels.

The success achieved with our customer in 2011 has resulted into two significant trends: Customer References and Vendor Preference

View Customer References

VMware View continues to have the largest number of big public references in the market as I wrote here and here. More coming later this week. These are customers who will get on stage or take calls and will proudly talk about their View deployments wit 8000, 1000, 15000, and 25000 seats.

Desktop Virtualization Vendor Preferences

VMware is a top vendor when it comes to customer preference for Desktop Virtualization according to the major financial analyst who cover this space, such as Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs.

I am excited about a busy 2012 where we are staying focused on helping more customers realize value from VMware Desktop products, while executing against the broader End User Computing vision that we announced at VMworld.

Over the last year there has been an acceleration in the deployments of virtual desktops in our customer base. As a result, we keep getting more and more customers willing to talk publicly about their experience with VMware View. We are very proud to add ADP to our list of prestigious customer references list.

ADP Dealer Services

ADP Dealer Services sought an end-user computing (EUC) solution from VMware to enable quick provisioning and de-provisioning of development environments. The ADP Dealer Services team chose VMware View for global deployment. With the View client, the developers access their remote workstations, either locally or remotely. The remote View workstation securely interacts with any ADP application from anywhere. The company has realized two great benefits – the ability for each administrator to manage 300-400 workstations, and the ability of the team to create and deploy workstations exceedingly fast, up to 50 or 60 a day.

Video Testimonial

At VMworld 2011 in Vegas, we unveiled VMware End User Computing Strategy (You can read more here and watch an interview on the topic here) and announced VMware View 5.0 which raises the bar for user experience with 3D graphics and Unified Communication support, and removes the last two remaining competitive hurdles (read more about it here).

For those of us who work in Software, there is nothing like shipping!!!! Code rules!!!! ..and to celebrate the this event and the engineers who worked on it, the View team got together and produced this video:

I hope you will enjoy seeing the team celebrating this great new release. We had a lot of fun making the video.

Thanks for your comments below. They are all welcome. Not everybody got the spirit of the video, but I believe Chris Wolf from Gartner summarized it pretty well in his blog post.

Ciao

Today at VMworld during Herrod keynote we unveiled our EUC strategy and announced the latest release of View: 5.0.

View 5.0 is a cornerstone of our EUC platform for the Post-PC era. That’s right!! With shipments of tablets and smartphones outpacing PCs since last year and 1.1B cell phones and 300M tablets projected to be sold in 2015 alone, the post-PC era is here, today

This new world needs a new approach, a new platform, a new management paradigm. We break it down into these three pillars

Simplify

Simplify is about fork-lifting EUC assets from the silos they run in today and turning the desktop, all type of applications, and user data into managed services (in YOUR hybrid cloud). This is where View 5.0 play a key role in delivering the desktop as a managed service.

Manage

Ones these assets have been de-coupled from their back-ends, we can now provide a common management platform that is designed and work across all of them and allows IT to define the policies about who get what, when and with what level of security. In this very heterogeneous new world, management cannot be an after though. It must be be baked in.

Connect

We can now connect users to their assets across all their devices through the Universal Services broker. We will run the application wherever most efficient and use the native capabilities of each device whenever possible.

Earlier this year, we introduced Horizon. Horizon provides the unified application catalog across SaaS, Enteprise and soon Windows applications but it is also rapidly evolving to become our Universal Services Broker, the core of the management platform for the Post-PC era.

Today, we also announced and demoed two new important technology projects that will come to market in the near future: AppBlast and Octopus

AppBlast – Universal Applivation Access

AppBlast allows users to access their Windows and Mac applications from any device running an HTML 5 browser. This technology is critical to both unlock existing applications and to connect users to them in a very simple way and without requiring major investment on the server side.

Octopus – Secure Data Access and Collaboration

Octopus provides secure data synching and sharing for end users across all devices while allowing IT to retain control of corporate data and define data sharing policies.

The Platform for the Post-PC Era

This is the platform that we are building in the End User Computing team at VMware. We are committed to help our customers get to a place where Windows is one of the choices, not the only one. We are building on the great success of View 5.0 and ThinApp but we are also accelerating our investment in the products and technologies we need to free our customer from the Windows-update vicious spiral.

I will elaborate more on the pillars of this platform in the coming weeks.

See you around at Vmworld 2011!!!

Vittorio

A couple of weeks back, we announced our Q2 financial results. If you missed it, you can read the transcript from Seeking Alpha. Overall, Q2 was a great quarter overall and for our the End-User Computing team.

A couple of things worth highlighting from Q2:

We closed the largest View deal ever – Q2 saw the continuation of previous quarters momentum for View. In fact, ee closed a major retailer in the US, which was the largest deal for VDI overall with well over 100,000 seats. We will be working with this company to help them manage their remote, in-store desktops. This is an exciting deal and one that speaks to a leading use case for VDI.

Customers moving from POC to large deployments – Another highlight is the growth in the number of existing customers, coming back and buying more. While this is definitely a good trend for us, we also think that it is a good sign for the industry at large as VDI takes hold, and moves into an expanding number of use cases. One customer worth mentioning is the largest bank in Tokyo. I have shared some info with you before about their deployment in a previous post. They have aggressively been deploying additional users on View and as of today, their deployment has reached 20,000 users.

As I written before, this is still an early market. New customers are always interested in referenceable customers. VMware View leads the way in terms of public customer references with over 1,000 seats, which is a testament to the great customer adoption that VMware View is experiencing.

Also, last week we also issued an announcement highlighting some great customers stories in the Education vertical as well. Worth checking out if you get a chance.

Ciao

Vittorio
