For those of us who work in Software, there is nothing like  shipping!!!! Code rules!!!! ..and to celebrate the this event and the engineers who worked on it, the View team got together and produced this video:

I hope you will enjoy seeing the team celebrating this great new release. We had a lot of fun making the video.

View 5.0 is a cornerstone of our EUC platform for the Post-PC era. That’s right!! With shipments of tablets and smartphones outpacing PCs since last year and 1.1B cell phones and 300M tablets projected to be sold in 2015 alone, the post-PC era is here, today

This new world needs a new approach, a new platform, a new management paradigm. We break it down into these three pillars

Simplify

Simplify is about fork-lifting EUC assets from the silos they run in today and turning the desktop, all type of applications, and user data into managed services (in YOUR hybrid cloud). This is where View 5.0 play a key role in delivering the desktop as a managed service.

Manage

Ones these assets have been de-coupled from their back-ends, we can now provide a common management platform that is designed and work across all of them and allows IT to define the policies about who get what, when and with what level of security. In this  very heterogeneous new world, management cannot be an after though. It must be be baked in.

Connect

We can now connect users to their assets across all their devices through the Universal Services broker. We will run the application wherever most efficient and use the native capabilities of each device whenever possible.

Earlier this year, we introduced Horizon. Horizon provides the unified application catalog across SaaS, Enteprise and soon Windows applications but it is also rapidly evolving to become our Universal Services Broker, the core of the management platform for the Post-PC era.

Today, we also announced and demoed two new important technology projects that will come to market in the near future: AppBlast and Octopus

AppBlast – Universal Applivation Access

AppBlast allows users to access their Windows and Mac applications from any device running an HTML 5 browser. This technology is critical to both unlock existing applications and to connect users to them in a very simple way and without requiring major investment on the server side.

Octopus – Secure Data Access and Collaboration

Octopus provides secure data synching and sharing for end users across all devices while allowing IT to retain control of corporate data and define data sharing policies.

The Platform for the Post-PC Era

This is the platform that we are building in the End User Computing team at VMware. We are committed to help our customers get to a place where Windows is one of the choices, not the only one. We are building on the great success of View 5.0 and ThinApp but we are also accelerating our investment in the products and technologies we need to free our customer from the Windows-update vicious spiral.

I will elaborate more on the pillars of this platform in the coming weeks.

A couple of things worth highlighting from Q2:

• We closed the largest View deal ever – Q2 saw the continuation of previous quarters momentum for View.  In fact, ee closed a major retailer in the US, which was the largest deal for VDI overall with well over 100,000 seats. We will be working with this company to help them manage their remote, in-store desktops.  This is an exciting deal and one that speaks to a leading use case for VDI.
• Customers moving from POC to large deployments – Another highlight is the growth in the number of existing customers, coming back and buying more. While this is definitely a good trend for us, we also think that it is a good sign for the industry at large as VDI takes hold, and moves into an expanding number of use cases. One customer worth mentioning is the largest bank in Tokyo. I have shared some info with you before about their deployment in a previous post.  They have aggressively been deploying additional users on View and as of today, their deployment has reached 20,000 users.

As I written before, this is still an early market. New customers are always interested in referenceable customers.  VMware View leads the way in terms of public customer references with over 1,000 seats, which is a testament to the great customer adoption that VMware View is experiencing.

Also, last week we also issued an announcement highlighting some great customers stories in the Education vertical as well.  Worth checking out if you get a chance.

I took the chance to officially announce that the next release of VMware View will feature a new version of PCoIP that brings down the consumption of bandwidth in WAN environments down by up to 75%. You can read the technical details in this blog post by Warren Ponder, our protocol guru.

Before the panel, Chris Wolf gave a great presentation on the opportunities and challenges for end user computing. In the section about VDI market he had a slide on why people choose Citrix  XenDesktop or  VMware View:

1. User Experience and WAN performance
2. XenApp Integration and bundled licensing and important to customers
3. Broad endpoint device support
4. Citrix loyalty

A fair assessment.

It is really amazing to work with the  VMware engineering team. It is scary to see what they can achieve when they put their mind to it. We have a history of great innovation, but we also listen to our customers and we mobilize around their requirements.And this is what we did to address 1 and 3 above (in collaboration with our good partner Teradici).

• Over the last 18 months we took care of 3 above (Broad endpoint device support). It took longer than we wanted as I explained this other post but today with the availability of the View Client for iPad and Android we cover 92% of the devices out there.

• As per today’s announcement, when the next release of View ships we are going remove the final technical hurdle (WAN performance).

The above with our platform leadership and superior ease of use (as per Gartner Chris Wolf) and manageability  (check out this other post to see for yourself), reaffirm VMware View as the clear leader of the very market we created 5 years ago.

We never rest and I am looking forward to a great VMworld in Vegas in a few weeks.

Last week, while I was on vacation, the team shipped another major release of the View Client, now supporting Android, which featured and Network World article.

I wanted to mark this important milestone with this blog post for two important reasons:

Device Coverage

First, by adding Android to the existing iPad client we now cover the majority of tablet devices our customers care about. This was one area where we were behind and we have now caught up with the market. Not only that, but the feedback about the quality and user experience for our mobile client has been terrific. Another great product form the View engineering team tat was worth the wait.

Client Release Agility

Secondly, we have now tuned our development and release process for mobile clients which allows us to be much more responsive to customers’ requests in this area going forward (starting with day zero availability of the View Client on the Cisco Cius when it launches)
